How to Dry Spent Grain May 10, 2017 10:30 2 Comments

spent grains

As you know, we add spent grains (and hops) to our soaps.  It is important to us to keep as many of the beer by-products out of the landfill.  So how do we do this?  Lets get started.

Grains are used to make wort (grain tea) that becomes beer through a fermentation process. To reuse grains for our soaps, we first have to dry them out....

  1. We spread out the wet grains on baking sheets and pop them into the oven on low for about 2 hours.

  2. About an hour into the drying process, we stir the grains to make sure they are drying evenly.

  3. Once they are dried, we grind them up and add them to our soap mixture right before we pour the soap into the molds.

You can use this same technique if you are making other spent grain products such as dog treats and bread.   Here are our suggestions for other ways to use spent grains!

What do you make out of your spent grains?

Cheers!
